What kind of readers is Interleaf Ink looking for?

We’re seeking readers who enjoy engaging thoughtfully with written work and sharing honest, considerate reactions. Reliability, communication, and respect for author boundaries and timelines are essential. Prior experience as a beta or ARC reader is welcome but not required.

What types of reading opportunities are available?

Volunteer readers may participate as alpha, beta, or ARC readers depending on interest and availability. Project assignments vary based on genre, stage of development, and reader fit.

What are the Reading Stages?

Each project stage asks readers to focus on different parts of the reading experience. Before joining a project, readers should review the expectations, timeline, and feedback requirements for that stage.

• WIP Alpha

  • A WIP Alpha is an incomplete or actively developing manuscript. Readers should expect rough sections, missing details, and possible changes while providing feedback on clarity, characters, plot direction, and overall engagement.

• Alpha

  • An Alpha is a completed early draft that may still need substantial revision. Readers focus on the story’s foundation, including plot, character development, pacing, confusing sections, and areas that need further development.

• Beta

  • A Beta is a revised manuscript approaching its final stages. Readers provide detailed feedback on pacing, consistency, emotional impact, readability, and the overall experience of the book from a reader’s perspective.

• ARC

  • An ARC is a publication-ready advance copy. Readers are generally expected to complete the book by the deadline and provide an honest review rather than developmental feedback or extensive manuscript comments.

All readers are expected to protect the author’s work, meet agreed-upon deadlines, and provide thoughtful, respectful, and honest feedback.

What kind of feedback is expected?

Feedback centers on the reading experience — clarity, pacing, emotional impact, engagement, and overall impressions. This is not technical editing or line-level critique unless otherwise coordinated. Feedback is typically shared directly with authors.

How much time is required?

Time commitments vary by project and reading stage. We aim to coordinate timelines that are reasonable and transparent. Communication is valued over perfection — if availability changes, readers are encouraged to let us know so expectations can be adjusted respectfully.

Are manuscripts confidential?

Yes. All manuscripts shared through Interleaf Ink are private and must not be distributed, quoted publicly, or discussed outside the agreed-upon context. Readers are expected to approach all projects with discretion and respect.

Is volunteering paid?

Reader participation is unpaid. Volunteers gain the opportunity to support authors directly, engage with works-in-progress, and be part of a thoughtful reader community. We deeply value the time and care contributed by our readers.
